I know, my goal of blogging at least twice a week, here, didn’t meet its target last week.  I blame the cats.  Not that they had anything to do with getting in the way of my blogging, but they have no defence fund.

Utilizing the Internet for research can be both fruitful and fraught with distraction all at the same time.  It’s so easy to leap from thought to thought as you are deep in a thought, and somehow you start at a research council and end up watching a cat play the piano on YouTube.

Working for a United Way is not just a career, a job or something to keep me off the streets, it’s living a life that means really always walking the walk.  It’s sort of like being clergy or a doctor, you’re never off the clock really.  No matter what the social situation, someone will want to discuss work with you.

As the Executive Director for the United Way of Bruce Grey. I am also the Chair of the Seniors Advocacy and Awareness Network (SAAN) the elder abuse network for Grey and Bruce Counties. I've just read this article in today's Toronto Star: Ontario elder abuse hotline in jeopardy and naturally I'm truly alarmed.

I drink tea.  I drink herbal teas, black no sweeteners (unless there’s a cold sniffling and then a touch of local honey in with the lemon).  The United Way’s kitchen currently has…hang on I have to go count…19  kinds of herbal tea.  You could say we enjoy our tea around here.

Over here at the United Way we don’t “endorse”, oh we will “friend”, we will “like” and we may as go as far as “supporting”, but we don’t “endorse”…mainly because we’re so fiscally responsible, we can’t afford to buy the company!

Mudtown Records presents the 2012 Lupercalia Winter Multi-Arts Festival in Owen Sound on February 17th & 18th,   And the United Way is a sponsor!   That must seem weird, why would a charity sponsor a community festival? Well this is roses!

It’s essentially been 3 days with no heat.  Oh we’ve had space heaters running, and there’s hot water etc.  But we’re only warm, where we’re at.  Move to another room in the house, you’re cold. The house gets no colder than 13C and no warmer than 18C. Noon today is “fix” time.  I’m living for noon.

Our Winter Warmth Fund is in the hole, we’ve helped more than we’ve donations for, and I’ve had to cut it off.  So not only are our clients cut off by their fuel companies, I’ve had to cut off access to help.  There are no dollars right now. And how do you do that?  How do you tell someone there is no help, that they’ve got to find another way? How can I do this when it haunts me so?

We're closed, just for a week.  With all the stat holidays in there, really we're only taking an extra 2 days.  Two days for our staff to relax, re-energize, spend time with their families and to celebrate whatever they wish to celebrate. But being closed comes with worry.  I worry for those who reach out for help, and get an answering machine instead of a voice. But the health of our staff is important, and having some downtime and holidays are equally important. So 211 is there, if it's an emergency, they know how to find me.  They know more than I know!
